hyenas, civets, chinkara (Indian Gazelle), Langur monkeys and the four horned antelope. The sanctuary also has a remarkable bird population ranging from Quail, Pea Fowl, Eagles, White Breasted Kingfisher, and the Great Indian Horned Owl. Safari trips are organized by the Forest Reception Office located on Jaipur Road. Wildlife enthusiasts can also book what is known as a 'hide' or a vantage point, which usually overlooks a waterhole, as this is a sure shot way of getting a close look at your favorite beasts when they come to quench their thirst.
Other places of interest
Apart from the wildlife sanctuary, Sariska also offers some old forts and temples for the history buff. Important among these are -
The Kankwari Fort - An old fort where the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb imprisioned his brother Dara Shikoh in his lust for power.
The Ancient Shiva Temples - Believed to be built between the 6th and the13th century A.D., these temples are known as the Neelkanth temples and were dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The Palace - Though it has now been converted into a hotel, the Sariska Palace used to serve as the lodging place of the royal family of Alwar whenever they came for hunting to Sariska.
Sariska is located at a distance of 21 km from Alwar, which is the nearest town as well as the nearest railway station. The bus service between Alwar and Sariska is also very regular. One also has the option of driving down from Delhi (200km) or Jaipur (110 km). The nearest airport is located at Jaipur.
Rajasthan Tourism provides good value for money accommodation at Sariska known as RTDC Hotel Tiger Den. You can also stay at Sariska Palace (which is now a heritage hotel) or the Forest Rest House.
Though the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is open to visitors throughout the year the best time to visit is from October to June
