India Travel - Safety and health

Your health should be of prime concern before you decide on taking a trip to India for if you fall ill, you will be unable to enjoy your India Travel.

India Travel can offer many health hazards. These can however be managed by a few simple precautions.

India Travel - Safety and health

The heat in summer can be very intense. Drinking plenty of water and fluids, wearing light comfortable cotton clothing, a sunshade and sunscreen lotion can help prevent sunstroke and sunburn, on your India Travel.

Alternatively, winters in some parts of North India can be very cold. Warm woolen clothing and hot meals will ensure you keep the cold at bay on your India Travel.

A common ailment that afflicts tourists from foreign shores is diarrhea and the best way to avoid frequent trips to the washroom is to stay away from green salads, food cooked in the open, cut fruits and of course, be very careful about the water you drink on your India Travel. Buy sealed bottled drinking water and if even after that you are unsure, drop a water-purifying tablet in your glass of water.

One of the commonest risks comes from the swarms of mosquitoes, particularly after the monsoons, which carry malaria, dengue, or even encephalitis. The best precaution is to cover your arms and legs. Use mosquito repellents, which are easily available. In some places where the armies of mosquitoes could make your nights difficult, use a mosquito net.

The other more serious diseases are Hepatitis, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Be responsible and always use a condom. Have safe responsible sex.

Although the general quality of India's health services may not be at par with what you get at home, the country has some world-class healthcare centers and India has become a popular medical tourism destination. These centers are usually in the metro cities and have well-stocked all night chemist outlets, competent doctors and excellent medical services. However, you could have problems in the small towns or rural areas. The advice is to remain close to big cities, especially if you are coming on your first trip to India.

Though medicines are fairly cheap in the country, it is worthwhile to bring your prescription drugs. It is also advisable to get shots for Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Diptheria, Tetanus and Japanese B Encephalitis, to ensure you have a safe India Travel experience.
