India Gate

India Gate was originally constructed as a memorial to commemorate the memory of the 90,000 soldiers, who lost their lives during the World War I.

Having a height of 42 m, India gate is located at Rajpath in Delhi, very near to the road leading to Rashtrapati Bhawan.

India Gate

The arch of the gate is 138 feet. Constructed and designed by the Sir Edwin Lutyens, India gate is also known as the All India War Memorial. The construction of the monument was completed in 1931 AD. During the summer evenings, the place becomes a popular place of relaxation while in winters it is an ideal place for having picnics.

India Gate at Delhi has the “Amar Jawan Jyoti”, burning under it since 1971. This gesture was taken up as a mark of respect for the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Indo- Pak War of December 1971. The names of all the soldiers are inscribed on the walls of the structure. At night, the nearby fountains are lit up by colored lights. A shining rifle with a helmet is placed on a high pedestal near the flame, as a tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives for the nation.

During your tour to Delhi, you just cannot miss out on seeing India Gate. This imposing structure is surrounded by lush green trees. A huge crowd of people are always on the move here. This monument located in the heart of Delhi, will make you recall the valor of the martyrs of the country who willingly sacrificed their lives for the country. It reveals the passion of the soldiers to save their motherland and rejuvenates the spirit of nationalism inside you.

Few meters away from India gate, a beautiful canopy or domed kiosk is placed, having a roof of sandstone. Under this the marble statue of George V was initially placed. This canopy was built in 1936 and was also designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Later the statue was removed from there and transferred to the Coronation Memorial Park in North Delhi.
