Nainital lies in the Gagar Valley where the Gagar range crisscrosses it from east and west. In the north lies the China Peak (8568 feet) and the Snow View Mountain, The Sher - Ka - Danda peak in the extreme east, the Deopatha in the west, while the Ayarpatha lies in the south.
The Naini Lake is the main tourist attraction of the town; in fact Nainital owes its very name to the lake. The lake is 1935 meters above sea level and its depth varies from 28 meters to 6 meters. Most of the hotels and shops can be found on the Mall road (now known as G.B. Pant road), which surrounds the lake. Other places of interest include the Boat Club, Nainital Club, the Flats (a vast level area where people enjoy football, hockey and other sports) and the Naina Devi temple. You can indulge in a pony ride along the lake, go peddle boating, enjoy a ropeway ride or simply stroll around the Mall or the Flats.
The best time to visit Nainital is during summer and autumn, especially the months of April to May and September to November. The best way to reach is by bus as most big cities in north India provide such services. If you prefer going by train, the nearest railway station is Kathgodam (35 km from Nainital) from where you would have to take a bus or a taxi for the remaining journey.
Some places of interest near Nainital include Bhimtal (22 km from Nainital), Khupratal (12 km), Sattal (23 km), Nakuchiyatal (27 km), Kainchi (20 km), Kilbury (12 km), Kausani (120 km), Corbet National Park (120 km) and Almora (67 km).
