India Travel - Hill Stations Tours in Kullu Manali

Manali has been a popular destination for honeymooners and for adventure sport fanatics as it offers a plethora of options that include trekking, mountaineering, rafting and skiing. The name "Manali" has an interesting story behind it. The name is derived from Manavalaya, which literally means the abode of Manu. According to traditional Hindu mythology Manu was the only survivor of the great flood and is the father of mankind. It is said that the beautiful environs of Manali were where he resided, hence the name.

While in Manali one can savor not only the majestic scenery but also the numerous temples and the colorful handicrafts of the local people. Beyond the valley at an height of 13,050 feet above sea level lies Rohtang Pass. This area has been well developed as a skiing facility during winter.

The Kullu valley itself is divided by the Beas River. It is 80 km long and 2 km wide. In ancient times Kullu was known as Kulanthpitha, which means the end of the habitable world. The Kullu valley is also known as the valley of the Gods as every village has its own deity. These deities are represented by silver or brass masks usually kept locked up and displayed only on festive occasions. If it is possible the best time to visit the valley is during the Dussehra festival held in October. All the deities are paraded through the town in lavishly decorated palanquins. On the first and seventh day of the festival the procession of palanquins is led by the Chariot of Lord Raghunathji, the supreme God of the valley. The festivities end with the burning of a huge effigy of Ravana on the banks of the Beas.

Places of Interest in Kullu Raghunathji Temple - According to legend in the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu obtained an image of Lord Raghunathji from Ayodhya to atone for some grave sin he had committed. The temple was built as an abode for this image and is considered one of the holiest spots in Kullu.

Bijli Mahadev Temple - Home to a unique phenomenon, the temple houses a 20 meter high rod which catches lightning from the sky and destroys the Shivlingam below it. Repetedly after such an event the temple priest puts the Lingam back together using only butter as glue.

Places of interest in and around Manali - Vashist Springs - These sulphur hot springs are considered to have great medicinal and rejuvenating properties. They are located close to the town and one can enjoy their advantages in a well buit bath complex that offers complete privacy.

Jagatsukh - The claim to fame of this village located approximately 6 km from Manali is its famous Shiva temple that is made in a unique tiered or 'shikhara' style.

Arjun Gufa - Located near the village of Prini on the left bank of the River Beas lies the Arjun Gufa or the cave of Arjun. According to the Mahabharata it was in these caves that Arjuna did penance after which he received the Pashupata Astra, Lord Indra's weapon.

Beas Kund - This is the origin point of the Beas. Its source is protected by an igloo like stone from where the river springs forth icy cold.

Rohtang Pass - Located at a distance of 50 km from Manali, the Rohtang Pass is the only link to the Lahaul Valley. The Pass is operational only from June to November. Close to the Pass lies the Sonapani glacier. Rohtang is being developed as a skiing destination to attract tourists to this cold and icy area.
