He believed the area to be sacred and holy and decided to locate his new capital there. He also named it after himself, hence the name Jammu. Jammu was home to various communities like the Dogras, the Sikhs and the Hindus who were all united by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1820 A.D.
Places of Interest -
Amar Mahal Palace- Now converted into a museum; this very European castle like palace overlooks the Tawi River. The palace owes its architectural style to the fact that it was designed and built by a French architect.
Bahu Fort - The ruins of this fort offer a great view of the city. It is believed to be 3000 years old. Located opposite the Bahu Fort is a memorial to Mahamaya, a local Dogra heroine who is said to have heroically martyred herself while fighting foreign invaders some 14 centuries ago.
Dogra Art Gallery - A treasure trove of Dogra art particularly Pahari miniature paintings, the Dogra Art Gallery is a must visit when in Jammu.
Jammu serves as a great connecting point for Kashmir be it by air, road or rail. Many picturesque spots like Kud (106 km from Jammu), Patnitop (6 km from Kud) and Batote (113 km from Jammu) make the journey even more exciting.
